Screening Report: 4 TW: The Wedding Banquet

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.

The Wedding Banquet was directed by Taiwan native, Ang Lee. After serving in the military, he moved to the United Sates where he received a bachelor's degree in Theater. In 1978 he attended NYU where he received a degree in Film Production. Throughout Lee's career, he received a number of accolades. He received 2 Oscar nominations and won two in  the early 2000's.

During the 1970's is when Lee arrived in the States. During this time Taiwan was in the process of establishing a government that was separate form China. Cinema arrived on on the island of Taiwan in 1901. It was not until the 1950's when the film community truly began to form. Ang Lee is the most well-known of the second wave. This placed Asian films in the international domain.

2) Find a related article and summarize the content.

The Wedding Banquet deals with a touchy subject but in a hilarious way.  The subject of the story was centered around two guy men who must hide their sexual orientation from family member. Within there own would, the are both out and happy. They seem to both be comfortable with their current situation. Then, there comes a sudden visit from on of their parents who happens to be Chinese and is very traditional. Once the arrival was announced the plot began to thicken and the story began to take flight. They began to remove all signs of homosexuality from the home and replaced it with traditional decor . A Chinese female friend was presented as the fiance and quickly moved into the house. The true partner was presented as the landlord. A friend of the father who owns a banquet hall offers to host a party for his son. While trying to keep up the lie, the relationships of the characters become strained. By the end of the movie, everyone has their own version of the truth and has made peace with the entire situation, baby and all.

The Directer approaches the subject in a discrete manner. The are moments of comedy but for the most part the characters project a feeling of hopelessness. The plot of the film is not necessarily new but was completed in a refreshing way.  The acting of the parents was brilliant. What makes the film work is the underlying validity of the story and how the director did not go for the melodrama (Ebert, 1993).

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.

The article did a great job of critiquing the film. I agree with the assessment that the film was hilarious and that the actors were great,  They did a great job with drawing us into the story and keeping us entertained. Lee was not into talking about the movement doing the time like Boyle "Choose Life". But he was very entertaining and he was able to make you care about the characters and empathize with each of them

4) Write a critical analysis of film, including your personal option, formed as a result of the screening, class discussion, text material and the article.

Lee is very insightful when it can to the perspectives of each of the characters. He did a great job at providing a voice and a point of view for each character. Though his eyes we see the humor and pain of each character.
