Screening Report 2: FR: Blue

Three Colors: Blue Poster

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
Krzysztof Kieślowski the polish born film maker started his career as a dressing room attendant in a theater. While working he was a student of film. Kieślowski’s films did not coincide with the happenings of the day. There were no slogans or catchy phrases.  Politics, culture and social detail were not the premise of his work which was ironic because most of his early work were documentary films.
Krzysztof Kieślowski gained worldwide renown for the Decalogue series, The Double Life of Veronique and Three Colors: Blue, Red and White. A filmmaker whose simple stories deal with difficult, essential and universal questions about complex human feelings. Kieślowski began paying close attention to visual effects, carefully selecting the hues of his images, filming his heroines differently, highlighting and adding to their being through color. The feeling that was displayed in Blue was the sadness associated with the feeling of blue. The use of these colors and the creation of hue is a trademark of Kieślowski.

2)  Find a related article and summarize the content.
To summarize, Rodger Ebert deemed this movie as an adult movie.  There are very little words spoken but the movie was very emotional. The characters did not provide any evidence of thoughts there are tools of the story. One must pay close attention to the story line and to understand were the characters are trying to take us.
Julie, the woman whose husband dies do not grieve in the traditional way which make the plot interesting. While dealing with the loss of her husband, she embraces her sexuality and tries to remove herself from society. Because she is so decisive one would get the feeling that is thinking and she does not in fact need to do anything that is obvious.
By the end of the film another character was introduced who was her husband’s mistress. Again, Julie does not react in a traditional jealous way. The two women then unite to figure out the future.
This film challenges the imagination which can be a new concept for an audience. European films are very different from those in the United States but a must see.

3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.
As discussed in class, this film is a French film and is part of a trilogy. The color Bleu and the emotion of the film were constants. A heart-dropping tragedy that overcomes its storyline to cleverly talk about the price of liberty. The somewhat obvious motif of blue is both subtle, while the simultaneously analytical and emotional use of music is beyond wonderful (swelling and going to black during her grieving).

4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.
Blue makes frequent visual allusions to its title: numerous scenes are shot with blue filters or blue lighting, and many objects are blue. When Julie thinks about the musical score that she has tried to destroy, blue light overwhelms the screen. The film also includes several references to the colors of the tricolor that inspired Kieślowski's trilogy: several scenes are dominated by red light, and in one scene, children dressed in white bathing suits with red floaters jump into the blue swimming pool. Another aspect in the film are the fade outs, which are traditionally used in movies to represent time passing or to conclude a certain scene, instead bring the viewers back to the point in time which the fade out began. The occasional fade outs and fade ins to Julie's character are used to represent an extremely subjective point of view
