Screening Report 1: UK: Trainspotting

1) Relate what was discussed in class or the text to the screening.
The introduction of the film as very robust. The class discussion set the tone of the film which made the experience more meaningful. Trainspotting is a British film that was directed by Danney Boyle. Boyle's trademark is that he starts the story with scenes from the middle of the film. He also uses editing and camera movement to convey time and emotions. Electronic music is something that is heard throughout the film. We discussed the use of colors within the film which heightened my awareness of the intensity of color and how it was used. The characters were looked at in both the past and in present day. This gave us an awareness of the range in which each actor possesses. During the 1990’s in the UK, it was said that there some unrest. The movement during that time was “Choose Life” which was echoed throughout the film.

 2) Find a related article and summarize the content.
This is a film about four friends in Scotland that are junkies whose accents are so think that subtitle is needed. They are so strung out that one of them he envisioned himself swimming in the filthiest toilet to retrieve a suppository. There were even unreal dreams while of dead a dead baby while trying to do without smack. Trainspotting was a great movie. The film was witty and provided a brilliant understanding of the character’s journey. Other movies that were also showcases this year does not stand up to Trainspotting. The characters are daring and are willing to lose everything which is not much. Viewing life is one of the things that Trainspotting points to in an artistic manner. It is evident how empty the lives are the characters are. Trainspotting is a movie worth watching.  3) Apply the article to the film screened in class.
The article did a great job of critiquing the film. I agree with the assessment of the film being brilliantly told. The day in a life of a junking in Scotland was colorfully and honestly portrayed. The article explained the essence of the characters and how they had gone through life in a heroin induces fog. The depiction of the characters in the article was spot on. The characters were funny and sad all at the same time.

 4) Write a critical analysis of the film, including your opinion, formed as a result of the screening, class discussions, text material and the article.
Danney Boyle is a champion of the people. He uses his talents to tell the story of the people. He can give insight into a character’s world. Through his eyes we can see the humor, pleasure and pain of the character. Boyle is also conscious of the world around him and incorporate the movement of the day. During the time that Trainspotting was make the movement was “Choose Life” which in itself was ironic due to the fact that it seems as if the characters were self-destructive.
